The Washington state legislature established Washington State University on March 28th 1890. This was one of the first major acts of the state legislature following the establishment of statehood in 1889. It was not until 1892 that the college opened in Pullman, followed by the first graduating class of 7 men and women in 1897. In 1905 the school adopted the name “State College of Washington” but was commonly known as “Washington State College”. The name was then changed by the state legislature to “Washington State University” (WSU) in 1959.

Today WSU has 12 colleges and a graduate school offering more than two hundred fields of study. The university annually confers around 5900 degrees & certificates statewide. In recent years the incoming freshman class has seen enrollment of around 4500 students. WSU is ranked 70th among public universities in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report rankings. A notable alum was counter culture legend and Nixon’s “most dangerous man alive” Timothy Leary, who received his psychology master’s in 1946. If you are an incoming student, we have written a list of things to do as a student at WSU and UI, I give both because WSU and UI are so close together, anything you can do as a student at one, you can do as a student at the other.
