About the Author
Richard Bussmann has a PhD in Egyptology. He has studied all phases of Ancient Egyptian language and has taught beginner and advanced courses in Middle Egyptian language firstly at UCL and now at the University of Cologne. He also co-directs an excavation project in Middle Egypt.
A refreshingly modern and unconventional introduction to Middle Egyptian, this book makes hieroglyphs accessible to independent learners, without expecting from them any previous knowledge of grammatical matters. Applying techniques developed in the teaching of modern languages and through the use of interactive exercises, the author introduces his readers to the original ancient texts from the very first page, allowing them to learn ancient Egyptian through practice, rather than theory.
For those who like learning new languages using learning by discovery rather than old-fashioned study of paradigms and memorization, this book might be just the place for you to learn Middle Egyptian, the basic language underlying Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Richard Bussmann offers a fresh new approach to reading hieroglyphs and Middle Egyptian texts, emphasising the reading of actual sources in their cultural context from the very beginning, and inviting the reader to participate actively in exploring the language and texts through a wide variety of carefully thought-out questions and exercises. Excellently suited both as an introductory course textbook and for self-study, the book will have readers studying their first hieroglyphic inscription very soon after picking up the volume. By the end of the book, they will have explored tomb stelae, royal inscriptions, letters and literary texts, and have acquired a solid knowledge of Middle Egyptian along the way.
