I Am Going! (An Elephant and Piggie Book) (Hardcover)
Spring 2010 Kids' Next List
“Gerald doesn't want Piggie to go. Who will he play ping pong with? Who will he wear silly hats with? And, most of all, who will he wear silly hats with while playing ping pong?! I Am Going is simple while having a funny and interesting story line to follow.”
— Maryam Yachnes, Hooray for Books!, Alexandria, VA
With young children at home and as the children's book buyer at BookPeople, I spend more time reading children's books than adult and we have been reading a lot of early readers at home this year with our favorites being Mo Willems "Piggy and Elephant" and Kate DicCamillo's "Mercy Watson" series. These are hilarious, engaging, colorful and dynamic books that pull in even the most reluctant early reader. I love that they are equally fun to listen to repeatedly and don't drive me crazy with their redundancy. The humor is palpable and the characters in both series interact with each other in manners that my kids find completely relatable. In the "Piggy and Elephant" book, Mo Willems uses dialogue between these two friends to tell the story and inflection, punctuation and emotion are intrinsically taught through the writing style. We started reading this series in a "buddy read" style and now the kids read them independently and I can always hear the chortles and loud laughs throughout the house regardless of how many times they are being reread. Kate DiCamillo's "Mercy Watson" series is a perfect first chapter book series that, while numbered 1-6, can be read in any order. They feature Mr. and Mrs. Watson, their pet pig Mercy and a host of other characters. Mercy's love of buttered toast, unintentional heroic antics and equally unintentional mischief have captured my kids and paved the way to the world of chapter books!— Jesica
Gerald and Piggie are best friends.
In I Am Going!, Piggie ruins a perfectly good day by telling Gerald she is going. If Piggie goes, who will Gerald skip with, play Ping-Pong with, and wear silly hats with?
Willems's Geisel Award–winning duo continues to delight readers with their silly shenanigans. Packed full of humor and heart, the Elephant & Piggie Books are vetted by an early-learning specialist and early learners themselves, so they'll be right on target for new readers.
Mo began his career on Sesame Street, where he garnered six Emmy Awards.
