The False Prince (The Ascendance Trilogy, Book 1): Book 1 of the Ascendance Trilogy (Paperback)
Reviewed by Amelia L:
Sage and 3 other orphans are taken to a place called Farthenwood. They are taken to Farthenwood to compete for the spot of a prince named Jaron. Prince Jaron was thought to be killed, but might have escaped. All of them are around the age of 14, the age that prince Jaron would be if he were to be alive. If Sage doesn’t get chosen he’ll die. If he does get chosen then he’ll have to lie about his true identity for the rest of his life.
Every part of the book keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are constantly surprising. There is always something new to learn about them. The characters are not always who you think they are. Sage is easy to relate to with his courageous and competitive attitude. Sage always comes up with great comebacks and is very stubborn. Sage will not surrender even if it means that he gets killed. The False Prince is by Jennifer A. Nielsen, and is fantasy, but feels like realistic fiction. People who like books with war, like the battles in Percy Jackson will probably like The False Prince series. You would also like this book series if you like fantasy.

“Led by the intimidating but brilliant Connor, four orphans are forced to compete for the essential role in a treasonous plot -- that of impersonating the long-disappeared Prince Jaron of Carthya. Set in the Middle Ages, this tale invites readers to follow 15-year-old Sage, a defiant and witty orphan, through a twisted, dangerous, and all-consuming journey that, if unsuccessful, will result in his death. Full of suspense and dark humor, The False Prince is a compelling read. I look forward to Book Two”

Choose to lie...or choose to die.
In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.
As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.
An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats.
